17th Avenue Extension & Victoria Park/ Stampede Station Rebuild
This key connector flows pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles from 17th Avenue SE and Macleod Trail through Stampede Park, connecting with the shops and restaurants along The C+E’s future festival street, Stampede Trail – 365 days a year.
The extension of 17th Avenue is integral to linking the district to neighbouring communities such as the Beltline and 17th Avenue SW, East Village and Inglewood with the sights and sounds of the BMO Centre, the event centre, Enmax Park and RiverWalk.
The project includes a reimagining of the Stampede LRT Station, transitioning it to an at-grade platform, allowing all modes of transportation to safely cross the C-Train tracks at a controlled crossing. Winding past the BMO Centre’s outdoor plaza, 17th Avenue will meet Stampede Trail, expanding access to Stampede Park and reshaping the way Calgarians and visitors experience The C+E beyond event days and festivals.
Timeline
Initial work began on the extension and station overhaul in Spring 2020, starting with a bridge over the Elbow River and a new utility complex. The project kicked off construction in July 2021 and transformed to street-level pedestrian access in October 2021. In 2022, the project team completed the new utility complex and the Elbow River siding track bridge, installed a new signal system, and completed the installation of 9.5km of duct in the transit right-of-way between Erlton and Victoria Park stations. The temporary outbound station became operational in October 2022 to enable transit operations through the demolition of the old station and construction of the new one. The team switched to the new station and permanent tracks in December 2023.
The new LRT station and 17th Avenue extension will be completed in coordination with the BMO Centre expansion, all of which will be completed for Stampede 2024.
The project team is working to ensure minimal disruption to LRT users and no impact on District-goers throughout construction.
