The BEACON - An Immersive Art Installation in The C+E

The C+E is all about spaces and places where celebration is a goal, a vibe, a way of life. Sometimes that celebration is an intimate acoustic concert, and other times it’s an eye-popping, goosebump-inducing spectacle. The newest immersive installation in the District does just that.

As we struggle to make sense of life after the pandemic, we are looking for signs of hope and, more importantly, proof our existence is meaningful. The BEACON is a light at the end of the tunnel, a reminder that there are better days on the horizon and to look for the good in each other, support each other, and forge a path to a new future together.

Standing just shy of 15 feet tall The BEACON is a giant pillar of light made from over 60 thousand-litre water totes and features 12 seemingly normal doors. When opened, 10 doors are mapped in a choreographed light, sound and video show instantly transporting you to ethereal places. Each door acts as a portal to another place in time and space, while every swing of the door reveals a new journey for you to embark on.

The challenge will be finding the two doors that grant you entry to the centre of the installation where you will find a spire of light reaching to the sky. Once inside The BEACON you will encounter an immersive sensory experience with its own unique visuals and soundscape. The centre spire is made of nearly 3,000 pixels creating an infinity video wall and spire of light stretching into the ether.

The BEACON will shine its light from February 11th to 27th and is open daily from 10am to 10pm adjacent to Enoch Park at 12th Ave and Macleod Trail SE. It was created by B!G ART for Chinook Blast and is presented by Victoria Park BIA in The Culture + Entertainment District. Chinook Blast is a month-long winter festival celebration with unique installations, events and pop-ups happening across the city.

Join us the last weekend in February for a pop-up experience at The BEACON featuring stilt walkers and an inflatable hockey game to test your shooting skills.
